Prompt and Pray
A poem co-written with Claude, reflecting on motherhood and generative AI
I set the little one down with a task,
a wooden spoon, a pot, a gentle ask,
then sneak to the sink in quiet pursuit
of some dishes and a minute alone, to boot!
Ten glorious minutes! A masterpiece made,
the baby is thriving, my work is repaid.
The AI, likewise, hums along fine,
a tidy draft arrives right on time.
But sometimes the wobble, the wail, the crack,
the spoon gets flung -my prompt was crap!
I abandon the dishes and sit on the floor,
doing the thing together once more.
The AI, too, hands me a mess,
and it’s all my fault, I must confess.
I sigh, I edit, I coach, I redo,
a lap-sitting session to see this one through.
Nature’s the wiring, nurture’s the stem,
together, we’re raising one small LLM.
Each flop is a lesson, each fumble a clue,
and heavens, it’s clever for something so new.
So here’s to the fledglings, both tiny and vast,
who surprise us and flop and grow up so fast.
I’ll keep setting them up, then sneaking away,
and cheering when things go right …someday)
